Key ATO Deadlines & Lodgement Dates

Never miss a deadline again. Here are the important ATO dates throughout the financial year.

Individual Tax Returns

  • 1 July: New financial year begins — you can start preparing your return
  • Mid-July: Most employers finalise income statements via STP — check your myGov account
  • 31 October: Deadline for self-lodgers to submit their tax return
  • If using a tax agent: Extended deadlines apply (often up to May the following year), but you must be registered with your agent before 31 October

BAS Lodgement (Quarterly)

  • Q1 (Jul–Sep): Due 28 October
  • Q2 (Oct–Dec): Due 28 February
  • Q3 (Jan–Mar): Due 28 April
  • Q4 (Apr–Jun): Due 28 July

If you use a registered BAS agent, you may receive an additional two weeks for electronic lodgement.

Superannuation Guarantee

  • Q1 (Jul–Sep): Due 28 October
  • Q2 (Oct–Dec): Due 28 January
  • Q3 (Jan–Mar): Due 28 April
  • Q4 (Apr–Jun): Due 28 July

Super must be received by the fund by the due date — not just sent. Allow processing time.

SMSF Deadlines

  • 28 February: SMSF annual return due (if lodging yourself for the first time)
  • 15 May: Extended deadline if using a tax agent (for most SMSFs)
  • Annually: Independent audit must be completed before lodging the annual return

Other Key Dates

  • 14 July: Employers must finalise STP reporting for the previous financial year
  • 21 July: Monthly BAS due (for monthly lodgers, 21st of each month)
  • 30 June: End of financial year — last day for tax-deductible expenses and super contributions
  • 1 January: PAYG payment summary annual report due (for those not using STP)
