Key ATO Deadlines & Lodgement Dates
Never miss a deadline again. Here are the important ATO dates throughout the financial year.
Individual Tax Returns
- 1 July: New financial year begins — you can start preparing your return
- Mid-July: Most employers finalise income statements via STP — check your myGov account
- 31 October: Deadline for self-lodgers to submit their tax return
- If using a tax agent: Extended deadlines apply (often up to May the following year), but you must be registered with your agent before 31 October
BAS Lodgement (Quarterly)
- Q1 (Jul–Sep): Due 28 October
- Q2 (Oct–Dec): Due 28 February
- Q3 (Jan–Mar): Due 28 April
- Q4 (Apr–Jun): Due 28 July
If you use a registered BAS agent, you may receive an additional two weeks for electronic lodgement.
Superannuation Guarantee
- Q1 (Jul–Sep): Due 28 October
- Q2 (Oct–Dec): Due 28 January
- Q3 (Jan–Mar): Due 28 April
- Q4 (Apr–Jun): Due 28 July
Super must be received by the fund by the due date — not just sent. Allow processing time.
SMSF Deadlines
- 28 February: SMSF annual return due (if lodging yourself for the first time)
- 15 May: Extended deadline if using a tax agent (for most SMSFs)
- Annually: Independent audit must be completed before lodging the annual return
Other Key Dates
- 14 July: Employers must finalise STP reporting for the previous financial year
- 21 July: Monthly BAS due (for monthly lodgers, 21st of each month)
- 30 June: End of financial year — last day for tax-deductible expenses and super contributions
- 1 January: PAYG payment summary annual report due (for those not using STP)
