How to Find Your TFN

Lost your Tax File Number? Don't worry — here are several ways to find it quickly.

What Is a TFN?

Your Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique nine-digit number issued by the ATO. You need it for employment, lodging tax returns, opening bank accounts, applying for government benefits, and managing your superannuation. It stays with you for life — you only get one.

Method 1: Check myGov

The quickest way to find your TFN:

  1. Log in to myGov (my.gov.au)
  2. Go to ATO services (you'll need to have linked your ATO account)
  3. Click My profile
  4. Your TFN will be displayed on this page

If you haven't linked your ATO account to myGov yet, you'll need to do this first. You'll need to verify your identity using information from your previous tax return or other ATO correspondence.

Method 2: Previous Tax Returns

Your TFN appears on your Notice of Assessment (the letter the ATO sends after processing your tax return) and on the tax return itself. Check your email or physical files for past ATO correspondence.

Method 3: Payslips and Income Statements

Some employers include your TFN on payslips or payment summaries. Check your most recent payslip or the income statement available through your employer's payroll system.

Method 4: Superannuation Statements

Your super fund has your TFN on file. Log in to your super fund's website or app, or check a recent annual statement. Your TFN is usually displayed in your account details or personal information section.

Method 5: Call the ATO

If none of the above methods work, you can call the ATO directly on 13 28 61 (individuals) or 13 72 26 (businesses). You'll need to verify your identity, and they can provide your TFN over the phone or send it to you by post.

Protecting Your TFN

Your TFN is sensitive personal information. Never share it on social media or unsecured websites. Only provide it to your employer, bank, super fund, the ATO, and other authorised parties. If you suspect your TFN has been compromised, contact the ATO immediately.
